What you’ll need
- 3-5 skeins of yarn in different colors (Lion Brand yarn is soft, inexpensive, and widely available)
- Jute twine (jute is a natural fiber)
- Scissors
- ¼-inch wooden dowel rod (you can get this at a craft store like Michaels)
- Shoebox lid or small book (to wrap the yarn into tassels)
How to Make a Tassel Wall Hanging
1.
Ready to shake things up a bit in your room and add some boho flair? We’ve got you. This DIY tassel wall hanging is the perfect way to brighten up your space!
2.
To make your tassels, wrap a skein of yarn around your shoebox lid or book (any hard flat surface will do) about 20-30 times.
3.
Cut across the bottom of the wrapped yarn, keeping the top part of the yarn folded in half.
I wanted my tassels around 4 feet long at the longest, so I cut my pieces of twine to be about 4 ½ feet long so I had room to tie the tassels around the dowel at the top.
4.
Then, on the top side, take one of the long pieces of pre-cut twine and bring it about 2-3 inches underneath the fold. Tie a double knot and trim off any excess twine (leaving the long piece as is so you can tie it to the dowel later).
5.
Using the roll of twine, tie a knot about 1 inch from the top of the tassel and start wrapping the twine around about 10 times. Tie a double knot and trim off the ends of the twine.
6.
Repeat steps #2-4 to make the remaining tassels. It’s up to you how many you want to make! I did about 25 (5 tassels of each color), which was enough to fill a 3-foot-long wooden dowel.
7.
Lay out your tassels so you can play around with the arrangement of colors. Once it’s arranged in a way you like, it’s time to start hanging!
8.
Hang up your wooden dowel on the wall by screwing in a couple of hooks or nails. (If you can’t put holes in the wall, Command hooks that stick to the wall will work too.) I used 2 small nails, one on each side of the dowel.
9.
Using a step stool or ladder, start tying your tassels to the dowel.
10.
Once all of the tassels are at the length you want, double-knot the twine at the top and trim off the excess tails.
TIP
Wait to double-knot your tassels until you’re finished hanging them all so you can adjust the lengths as you go.
Have fun getting crafty, ladies!
