  • About Us
  • Read Geaux Girl!

by Erin Zimmer Strenio

Whether you’re heading to a festival, planning a birthday party, or just hanging with your besties, flower crowns are a fun DIY project that adds fresh (and fragrant!) pizzazz to your look. We met up with Brandi Charlot, a local flower crown artist and florist behind Blucid ºFloral (@blucidfloral), to learn from the best. “Flower crowns make you feel like a goddess,” she told us. And who doesn’t want to feel like a goddess?! Flower crowns only take about 15-20 minutes to make once you have all the necessary supplies.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

  • Floral wire
  • Floral tape
  • Garden shears, wire cutters, or sharp scissors
  • Ribbon
  • Florals (real or faux, you pick!)
  • Greenery such as eucalyptus or crepe myrtle leaves
  • Texture such as baby’s breath, fennel or dill flowers

FLOWER GUIDE

Flowers that grow locally in NOLA:

  • Zinnias
  • Daisies
  • Gomphrenas
  • Echinacea
  • Sunflowers
Not always local, but always pretty:
  • Roses
  • Peonies
  • Dahlias
  • Orchids

Real vs faux flowers:
While we love fresh flower crowns, they can start to wilt after a few days. Pro tip: store your crown in the fridge to keep it fresh longer. If you want an even longer-lasting crown, shop for faux flowers at Target, Michaels or JOANN Fabrics.

STEP BY STEP

Step 1 Forming Your Crown: Take two pieces of ¬oral wire, about 12-14 inches long each, and wrap floral tape around both pieces together from end to end. Once you’ve wrapped them (be sure to pull the tape tightly), make a loop at each end of the wire – this is where you’ll tie the ribbon around the back of your head once you’ve added all the flowers.

Step 2 Flower Time! Pick a “statement flower” to go in the center of your crown (center of the wire). Leave about 2 inches of the stem and cover it with floral tape, then attach it to the wire with more tape.

Step 3 Create Clusters: Choose pairs of flowers that go well together; pick color schemes you like. Then wrap tape around the stems to form clusters (mini bouquets!). When taping the stems, start from the base of your flowers then wrap downward. Just be careful since fresh flowers are fragile! Once you’ve formed your clusters, lay them flat on the wire, with the flowers facing the center “statement flower” and affix the stems to the wire with more tape.

Step 4 Greenery & Texture: Intersperse your flowers with greenery like eucalyptus leaves, which add a fresh, crisp fragrance! Baby’s breath will add nice texture too. Mix colors and have fun arranging different textures – there are no rules, just have fun with it!

Step 5 Crowning of the Flower Queen: Tie your favorite ribbon through each loop at the ends of the wire and measure the crown around your head. Cut off however much ribbon you’ll need for the perfect fit. Ta da, you’re now a flower crown goddess!
