About Electric Girls
Electric Girls came to be in 2015 when female audio engineering student Flor Serna experienced sexism and gender bias in her work, education, and relationships with male peers. What she observed was a serious lack of female representation in the eld of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). Flor set out to provide an opportunity to New Orleans girls to become future leaders in technology. In her research, Flor found overwhelming evidence that girls thrive in all-female learning environments. us began the first Electric Girls Summer Camp, and it sparked a whole new world for girls in New Orleans. Electric Girls programs provide fundamental tech skills that allow girls to become proficient in soldering, sawing, drilling, the use of the multimeter, solder sucker, wire cutters, wire strippers, and so on. Girls can also learn how to use 3D printers and laser cutters. They can even practice their programming skills in HTML and Arduino. e coolest part? Girls use their new skills to build custom designed inventions they get to take home. Bubble blowing machines, light-up fidget spinners, doorbells that play your favorite song… the sky’s the limit. Being an Electric Girl is all about being creative and imagining what’s possible!

“At first, Electric Girls gave me the opportunity to bring my ideas to life. After becoming a counselor, I found that the best feeling in the world is when you see a girl fall in love with science and electronics. I feel like I’m really making a difference!” – Hazel (15)
“I love Electric Girls because girls can learn what girls don’t usually get the chance to, just because they are girls.” – Mei (11)
