New Orleans is divided into 17 wards. The 18th Ward Sports Club was created so kids from across the city can come together and play baseball, basketball, flag football, soccer, and run track no matter their race, gender, income, or athletic ability. The low-cost, inclusive sports programs are for kids ages 3-12, but high schoolers can get involved through their Coaches in Training program.
Coaches will gain leadership skills, have access to college counseling and job training opportunities, and get paid $15 an hour while coaching. You don’t need to be a sports star or have any previous experience to be a great coach. The 18th Ward Sports Club is looking for well-rounded folks who love working with kids and want to build a stronger community. Once a coach, you can plan to commit two hours a week to coaching at one of their many school sites across the city, with more hours available for coaches who really enjoy the experience and work well with the kids.
“The coaching program made me feel very, very prepared to become a teacher. Pretty much all of what my school leaders want to see are things we already do in The 18th Ward. I am grateful for that preparation so I can be a great role model for my students, especially the girls in my class who are used to having male coaches.”
Janeicia, Cabrini High School graduate
Loyola University basketball player, now a physical education teacher at Langston Hughes Academy
“The 18th Ward has given me a lot of opportunities since I started as a Coach in Training, but the hope y’all have given me is why I appreciate y’all the most.”
Kassie, Booker T. Washington High School graduate, now a student at Pearl River Community College
“The experience as a Coach in Training was bittersweet for me. I became sad at the end of my final season before graduation. I have never been in an environment as genuine and welcoming as The 18th Ward.”
Nia, Lusher High School graduate, now a student at Florida A&M University
