Things to Be Thankful For
By MILLECENT HELMKA
crickets chirping during quiet moments
hot chocolate and blankets by the fireplace
old tv shows on an old tv in an old house owned by an old lady
trees hanging on to dear life as their leaves change with the seasons
cats lying on the hoods of cars as they bathe in starlight
old fountains turning sage as the birds perch on their statues
blossoming romances by fluorescent lights
warm milk lulling children to sleep in freshly washed sheets
photo albums stained yellow with age
dozing off on long road trips as night falls
hugging friends just because
once surreal dreams coming to fruition
the conclusion that life is worth living
Millicent Helmka is a freshman at Lusher Charter School. While she isn’t entirely sure of her “end goal,” or if there’s really a need for one, because it is too early to tell, she does want to pursue a career that will allow her to live comfortably off changing people’s hearts and minds using her own writing.
